MP Cong set to authorise Sonia to decide state chief
There is every indication that the Congress party delegates who would be meeting here on Monday to participate in the process to elect the new Madhya Pradesh Congress president would pass a single line resolution authorising Congress president Sonia Gandhi to take the final decision in this regard.
As per the schedule announced by the AICC election authority, September 12 and 13 are fixed for filing nominations for the MPCC president’s post.
The scrutiny of papers is scheduled for September 14, withdrawal on September 15 and voting on September 17. State Congress president Suresh Pachouri is the top contender for another term in office.
After serving as a Union minister for a second term, he was chosen by the party president to lead the Congress party in the 2008 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh.
In that election the Congress party could not defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party but managed to improve its tally of seats in Vidhan Sabha from a dismal 38 in the previous election to 71.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections that followed the Congress party won 12 seats in Madhya Pradesh against the 4 seats it had won in 2004. Mr Pachouri did not contest both these elections but chose to campaign vigorously for the party candidates.
After the United progressive Alliance (UPA) government came to power at the Centre, the state Congress unit has been in the forefront holding public rallies and carrying forward a door to door campaign throughout the state to build awareness among the common public about various Central government schemes and the volume of funds allotted by the Centre for different public welfare schemes.
