MP leads in agri growth in 2013
Madhya Pradesh has taken a lead over all major states in terms of growth rate and has registered double-digit growth for second consecutive year, both in terms of agricultural growth and gross state domestic product during 2012-13.
According to the statistical estimates of states released by the Central Statistics Organisation (CSO), Madhya Pradesh’s agricultural growth rate during 2012-13 was 14.28 per cent and GSDP 10.02 per cent. In 2012-13, Madhya Pradesh has dislodged Bihar and occupied the top position in respect of GSDP. Last year Bihar was on the top with 13.26 per cent GSDP followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11.81 per cent. As per the 2012-13 estimates, Bihar’s GSDP has come down to 9.48 per cent. MP has made rapid progress in all three sectors — agriculture, industry and service — since 2004-05. Significantly, the state’s GSDP has risen by 96 per cent in last seven years. At constant rates, Madhya Pradesh’s GSDP in base year 2004-05 stood at `111926.89 crore. This has increased to `221462.86 crore in year 2012-13. As per a quick estimate, it was `201898.87 crore in 2011-12.
The agriculture growth rate in Madhya Pradesh was 7.98 per cent in 2004-05 and in 2011-12, the state created a record by registering the highest agricultural growth of 18.91 per cent. As per advance estimates, Gross State Product at constant rates in the primary sector (agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fish production) which stood at `31238.30 crore in 2004-05 went up to `53,503.43 crore in 2012-13.
Total land under agriculture in Madhya Pradesh in 2004-05 was 1.97 crore acre but it increased to 2.21 crore acre in 2011-12.
Agriculture production in the state, which stood at 2.49 crore metric tonnes in 2004-05, went up to 3.02 crore metric tonnes in 2011-12. While production of paddy, gram and mustard went up substantially over the last few years, there was record production of 127 lakh metric tonnes of wheat in Madhya Pradesh in 2011-12. From only 7 lakh hectare under irrigation in 2004-05, the total area under irrigation has now gone up to 21 lakh hectare.
