MP to teach Bhagavad Gita in Urdu

Bhopal: Bharatiya Janata Party government in Madhya Pradesh has passed an order to teach Bhagavad Gita to Class I and II students in the state-run Urdu medium schools from the current academic session.
According to available information, the state school education department issued an order last Thursday to “add one chapter each covering incidents from the Bhagavad Gita in the textbooks of General Hindi for Class III to VIII, special English and special Urdu for Class I and II for the 2013-14 academic session.”
When contacted, state Congress committee spokesperson J.P. Dhanopia said that the Congress supports the idea of including the relevant teachings of every religion or religious texts in schools. “Why only Bhagavad Gita for class I and II students of the government-run Urdu medium schools?”, he asked.
On July 4, the school education department had issued another order to include teachings from Bhagavad Gita in the textbooks of Special Hindi from Class IX to XII and special English in Class XI and XII. In 2011, the state government had taken the decision to introduce Bhagavad Gita in the school syllabus.
A petition by Catholic Bishop Council’s Fr Anand Mutungal to challenge this decision was dismissed by the Jabalpur High Court.
