MPs call on Sibal over AMU court meeting
After meeting President Pratibha Devisingh Patil and seeking her intervention in postponing the annual meeting of the Aligarh Muslim University court, a group of parliamentarians met Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal seeking his cooperation on the issue.
The AMU court meeting is scheduled to be held on December 19 to elect the university’s next chancellor. Sources stated that the delegation submitted a memorandum signed by 137 MPs from different political parties seeking Mr Sibal’s intervention in the ongoing affairs at the AMU.
The memorandum sought postponement of the annual meeting of the AMU court which is to be held on December 19 to elect the university’s next chancellor, pro-chancellor, treasurer and six members of the executive council. Alleging that the date of December 19 had been “deliberately chosen by the AMU vice-chancellor” the memorandum also pointed out that plenary session of the AICC is being held between December 18 and 20. It stated that a large number of MPs, who are also members of the AMU court, will thus not be able to attend the AMU Court meeting.
The MPs who met Sibal include Rashid Alvi, Sharfuddin Shariq, Dharmendra Yadav, Ali Anwar Ansari, Arvind Sharma, Ashaq Ali Tak, V Hanumant Rao and former MP and member of AMU Court Wasim Ahmad.
