MPs meet PM, threaten to quit
Congress MPs, from Telangana region on Thursday called on the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and made it clear that they would not be able to continue as MPs if the demand for a separate state is conceded by the Centre.
A few MLAs, two ministers and two former ministers accompanied from the state Cabinet them. They also
submitted a memorandum in connection with it and exuded confidence that the Centre would respond positively to their demand.
Addressing the media after a 45-minute-meeting with Dr Singh, the leader of the delegation Mr K. Keshava Rao said that they had briefed the Prime Minister about the ground realities. He said, “ We told him about the prevailing situation in Telangana and explained to him our position. We made it clear that we cannot continue in our position, if the demand for a separate state is not conceded soon.”
When asked if he was confident that his party would grant Telangana, Mr Rao answered in the affirmative. “ Of course, my party will grant it. It is not as simple as it is made out.
There is a constitutional process, which the government has to go through. So it will take time. But our party will give it.”
Listing out the assurances given by his party and the centre over the controversial issue, Mr Rao said that 2004 congress manifesto, the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) and the Presidential address to Parliament then had mentioned the issue of Telangana. Furthermore, he said that the Union home minister Mr P. Chidambaram made an announcement on December 9, 2009 on the formation of Telangana.
The issue is all set to be discussed on June 15 in the Core Committee Meeting and the Congress Telangana leaders are prepared to wait till then, said Mr Rao.
Among those who were a part of the delegation apart from K. Keshav Rao are Vivek, Madhu Yashki, Rajagopal Reddy, Gutka Sukender Reddy, Mandha Jagannathan, Rajaiah, Balram Naik, Sarve Satyanarayana and V Hanumatha Rao. Two minister namely Mrs Geeta Reddy and Basavaraja Sarvaiah were also present during the meeting.
Five MLAs namely Somaram Satyanarayana, Nandishwar Goud, Prabhakar, Muthyam Reddy and Kishta Reddy and two former ministers namely Jupally Krishna Rao and Fariddudin were also in the group.
