MSY rejects parallel with riots in Gujarat
Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav has rejected the allegation that the Muzaffarnagar riots were running parallel to the Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002.
Talking to reporters in Agra on Thursday, he promised “justice for victims” and “action against the culprits”.
Mr Yadav told reporters that “there was no justice in Gujarat but justice will be done in UP. I have never indulged in the politics of caste and religion. I promise that strict action will be taken against the guilty. We will provide the maximum possible assistance to the riot victims.”
He further said that Mr Narendra Modi as a Gujarat chief minister had not acted during the Godhra riots and even stopped the police form taking action. “But we will take such strong action that the culprits will never dare to repeat their mistakes,” he added.
Mr Yadav assured that the government will soon arrest all those who are on the run. He also said that officers found guilty of negligence or laxity would also face action.
Meanwhile, the SP has categorically turned down the demand for UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s resignation, following the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar.
The SP has said that Mr Akhilesh Yadav will continue to work as chief minister and blamed the opposition parties for sowing the seeds of mistrust and vitiating the atmosphere in the state. Mr Yadav has already defended the chief minister and said that it was a “caste conflict” and not communal riots that took place in Muzaffarnagar.
“There is no question of Akhilesh Yadav quitting. Why should he? An investigation into the riots has been ordered and a judicial commission has been appointed. The truth will be out soon. Some political parties are responsible for what has happened. What were the BSP MP and the BJP MLAs doing there?” said Mr Madhukar Jaitley, Samajwadi leader.
