Mudslinging before poll dates announced
Though, the Election Commission of India is yet to announce the date for elections in Assam, the mudslinging and clashes between the workers of political parties have started dominating the state.
In one of such incident more than 20 people were wounded in central Assam’s Nagaon district on Monday when former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta went to address a public rally of the party workers at Samaguri, the Assembly constituency represented by forest minister Rockybul Hussain in central Assam’s Nagaon district.
The AGP workers had organised the public rally to invite Mr Mahanta for contesting from Samaguri against the Congress minister who hurriedly organised a public rally to counter the AGP, resulting in clashes between the Congress and AGP workers. Though, police managed to pacify the situation through effective intervention, the incident has surcharged the atmosphere of the state.
It is not the only political clashes in fact a war of words between the leaders of ruling Congress and opposition AGP leaders have also started. In response to charges of AGP of rampant corruption during the Congress regime, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has launched a counter attack on Mr Mahanta. “I don’t know if AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is suffering from cataract as he has not been able to see any development works of my tenure. All the time he is pointing out failures of my government,” said Mr Gogoi.
He defended himself saying, “I have been accused to have been involved into the NC Hills scam which I unearthed. I asked for the special audit of the NC Hills account.”
