Mukul Roy announces rollback in rail fare hike
The Indian government rolled back many parts of a hike in rail fares on Thursday, underscoring the Congress-led coalition's difficulties in passing tough measures.
"I intend to give relief to the already burdened common man," new railway minister Mukul Roy told Parliament after his predecessor Dinesh Trivedi resigned on Sunday.
Mr Roy told Parliament that fares for first and second class passengers in air-conditioned carriages would go up, but there would be no increase in fares for other classes of travel commonly used by the poor.
