It was not Ash’s baby or Sunny Leone who was in Mumbai for ‘Big Boss' who turned out to be the hottest topic in Twitter on Sunday. It was the age-old Mullaperiyar dam.

As many as 20 tweets per minute were made on the Mullaperiyar issue. The word Mullaperiyar was also the second topic in the trending list for most part of the day. In the wake of the mild tremors in the Mullaperiyar dam area, netizens also joined hands for a campaign through tweets and Facebook posts.

Actress Rima Kallingal, director Ashique Abu and the famous Malayali rock band Avial also tweeted with scores of Malayalis on Mullaperiyar, while the blog post by popular blogger Berly Thomas went viral in the cyber world.

Twitter experts pointed out that the campaign initiated by Keralites through Facebook could be compared with the similar one on Telangana issue.

The rock group Avial on Sunday announced that in support of the campaign for a new dam, a new version of their hit number ‘Aaranda’ will be released soon.

Ashique Abu tweeted “Mullaperiyar dam won’t ask for anyone’s permission to collapse’ and announced his support for the Avial band.

Rima also tweeted and she even asked Barkha Dutt of NDTV to make it a nationally important topic.
Ebin Sam tweeted, “In 1975 Banqiao Dam killed 2 lakh & 11 million were homeless & the Chinese woke up. If Dam bursts, the water is gonna flow at around 100Mph. Nothing can or will stand in its path.â€

Facebook members posted documentaries made on the topic and several photographs to create awareness among the people.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
