Mumbai for Marathis, says Joshi
Senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi has said Mumbai belongs to Marathi people and demanded controls be brought on migrants from other states.
"It is well settled that Mumbai belongs to Marathi people. It has been decided already and to my mind, a debate on this issue is not necessary," Mr Joshi, former Lok Sabha Speaker, said.
He was speaking at a debate on "Mumbai for All", organised by Outlook magazine here last night as part of its "speak up" event series, to mark 15 years of the magazine.
Stating that around 300 families come to Mumbai daily, Mr Joshi said, "there is a limit to accommodate people in the city and the influx has caused strain on civic infrastructure."
"Controls should be brought on migrants from other states," he added.
Senior journalist Kumar Ketkar, who participated in the debate, said the formation of another party (Raj Thackeray-led MNS) shows that the Sena has failed in its aim.
"Strangely, after the Sena's birth in 1966, the identity of the Marathi manoos has gone down," Mr Ketkar said.
