Mumbai rape: DNA samples match

In a major development that may guarantee a conviction for the five accused in the gangrape case, the DNA samples found on the victim’s body matched with all the five accused. One of the accused was found to be a minor and, thereby, sent to the juvenile remand home. The police also added three other sections in the case after recording a supplementary statement of the victim.
Samples from the victim’s private parts were matched with the ones found on the accused’s undergarments, clothes and other tests that were conducted on them. “We have received the report from the forensic science laboratory in Kalina which says the samples are clearly matching. This is the most irrefutable and the strongest piece of evidence in the case which proves that the accused had committed the rape. The development is a major relief,” said joint CP (crime) Himanshu Roy. One of the accused in case, was also established to be a minor after his brother produced a birth certificate which said he was born in February 1997.
“We have checked the authenticity of the certificate with the BMC which confirmed it was genuine. He will now be tried in a juvenile court where the maximum punishment, if convicted, would be three years,” said a crime branch source. The magistrate court also extended the police custody of three of the accused till September 5. Salim Ansari, the accused nabbed from Delhi, was already remanded to police custody till the same date.
In another development, officers also added three additional sections in the case after recording a supplementary statement of the victim.
“We have added sections 377 (unnatural sex), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. The supplementary statement of the girl was recorded since we felt she might have possibly missed out some details owing to her traumatised state of mind when she first spoke to us,” Mr Roy added.
Meanwhile, the crime branch is now awaiting results of samples collected from the crime scene by the forensic labs at Gandhinagar and Delhi.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
