Musharraf to face treason trial: Sharif
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in a historic announcement on Monday, said former military ruler Pervez Musharraf will be tried for treason under Article 6 of the Constitution for violating the Constitution.
Addressing the National Assembly, Mr Sharif said Mr Musharraf, who ousted his government in 1999 in a military coup, had committed treason by abrogating the Constitution and that he should be tried under the law and punished accordingly.
This will be the first time in Pakistan’s history that a former dictator will be tried for treason.
The military has ruled the country directly for over half its age as an independent nation since 1947.
The government will submit its written stance in Musharraf treason case currently being heard in the Supreme Court through attorney-general Munir A. Malik.
