Naidu no to Modi not clear
Hyderabad: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu who fought the 2004 general elections in alliance with the BJP, is now non-committal about a tie-up with the BJP. Naidu neither welcomed nor rejected Gujarat CM Narendra Modi’s olive branch inviting him to join the NDA to get rid of the Congress-led UPA government.
“We are anti-Congress. But this is not the time to comment (on Modi’s plea) when AP is in turmoil. Praising NTR is history. He was a great leader. TD played a key role under him to form three out of four non-Congress governments at the Centre,” Naidu said. The TD headed by Naidu, was a part of the BJP-led NDA and supported the Vajpayee government from 1998 to 2004.
The BJP also blamed the TD for the defeat saying anti-incumbency against the TD led to their rout. The TD and BJP fought 2005 municipal polls and 2006 panchayat polls separately. Modi praised TD founder NTR and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in his speech in the state capital on Sunday. Clearly the TD chief is keeping his options open.
Meanwhile, Naidu seems to have dropped his plans to go to New Delhi with a party delegation to call on the President and Prime Minister to air the grievances of Seemandhra people over bifurcation of the state. He said he had no such plans.
