National meet to tackle beggary
Union minister for social justice and empowerment, Mukul Wasnik, has said that it needs to be found out why people are sliding into beggary despite the large number of government schemes that exist for those belonging to the vulnerable sections of society.
His observation came on Thursday during a national consultation meeting on beggary that was organised by his ministry in New Delhi. Among those who participated in the national consultation were senior ministry officials, state government officials and NGO representatives.
Mr Wasnik who chaired the national consultation said that mere legislation would not suffice to deal with the issue and that an attitudinal change too was required.
He also emphasised the need to deal with the issue in a humane and sensitive manner.
In this context, he said that the police needs to be trained to deal with the problem of beggary in a more professional way.
