Navjot sidhu in highway assault row
Amritsar’s BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu allegedly assaulted a security guard of a toll gate on NH5 near Sullurpeta when the windshield of his car was damaged after the guard hit it with a bolt attached to a plastic pipe on Tuesday.
Sources said the car’s driver and a friend of Mr Sidhu who was also present, bundled the guard, Mr P. Chanchu-ramaiah, into the car and took him to the Swarna Bharat Trust in Venkatachalam. Mr Sidhu was on his way to the trust from Chennai to participate in a programme on Tuesday afternoon. While staff at the toll gate said the guard was not at fault, Mr Sidhu’s driver alleged that he had damaged the car.
The toll gate staff said there was no sticker on the car to indicate that it belonged to an MP and added that the driver ignored the guard’s signal to stop and took the car through the service road. The driver, however, maintained that Mr Sidhu had shown his MP’s ID card when the guard had objected to their entry.
