Navy petty officer held for spying
A petty officer of the Indian Navy has been arrested by the Delhi police’s special cell on charges of spying.
Police officials said the accused, identified as Chand Kumar Prasad, was held at the New Delhi Railway Station by a team of special cell officials on Wednesday evening a
nd taken into custody. The police has charged him for violating the Official Secrets Act and he was produced before a magistrate at Tis Hazari courts here on Thursday, which remanded him to five-day police custody.
Highly-placed police sources said Kumar, who was posted in Mumbai, was carrying some crucial and “sensitive” information when he was arrested. Sources revealed that Kumar was on his way to Nepal to pass on the information to another man when he was arrested.
“Kumar was on the radar of investigation after his recent visit to Ahmedabad. He is believed to have met members of a terror module with links to Pakistan in Ahmedabad who gave him a package containing some sensitive information on the Indian Navy and defence. He was asked to deliver the package to another man in Nepal,” the sources said.
The sources added that Kumar was planning to catch a train from the New Delhi station on Wednesday evening to Gorakhpur from where he would have crossed into Nepal and delivered the package. When contacted, joint commissioner of police (special cell), P.N. Aggarwal, said, “We are carrying out our investigation. Give us some time.” Asked what group Kumar was linked with, Mr Aggarwal said, “Let us finish our inquiry before arriving at any conclusions.”
