Naxalism mirrors govt failure: Pranab

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday expressed concern over spread of left wing extremism in some backward areas of the country and said that it partly reflects the government’s failure in meeting the expectations of people.

“I am particularly concerned over the spread of left wing extremism in some of the more backward areas of the economy. In part, it is a reflection of our failure in meeting the expectations of the local people,” he said, speaking at the 71st Raising Day Celebrations of CRPF.
Mr Mukherjee said that the writ of the Constitution should be implemented across the country and stressed on the need for development work and police action to go hand in hand to fight the Maoist menace.
Terming Naxalism the “biggest threat” to peace and security in the country, the minister said it is easy to misguide people who have been “denied their legitimate demands or deprived of their rights and where the state has not shown adequate sensitivity in sharing and mitigating the local concerns.”

Dec. 28: Some visa restrictions have been lifted but the countries in South Asia need to do more to facilitate travel of journalists and to ensure free flow of information, according to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee.
“I think we took some decisions about relaxation of visas and some progress has been made but still there are some hindrances which can be addressed,” Mr Mukherjee said at a function held to mark the 10th anniversary of the South Asia Free Media Association.
“There should be a free flow of information. Naturally when I am suggesting that there should be free flow of information sometimes the visa restrictions which are applicable to even journalists could be eased,” Mr Mukherjee noted.
