NC Hills scam: PAC asks for CAG report
The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament has asked the Comptroller-and-Auditor-General to present the inspection report of the special audit on transaction in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council of Assam.
The inspection report of the CAG has rocked the state’s political scenario since it was published for the first time by this newspaper on November 22.
It came to focus further after the entire Opposition, cutting across party line demanded resignation of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi for his failure in checking corruption.
Many NGOs and noted RTI activists Akhil Gogoi also joined the issue charging Assam ministers of setting up their business establishments, news channels and newspapers from fund being siphoned off from the NC Hills council.
It has got further momentum when the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament has called for the inspection report of the special audit on transactions in the NCHAC, which may also be raised in Parliament.
Bogged down by all round attacks of the Opposition, Assam health minister and spokesperson of the state government Himanta Biswa Sarma here on Sunday told reporters that in the next 10 days they would clarify all anomalies pointed by the CAG in its inspection reports. He accused the Opposition of unnecessarily dragging the issue merely on an inspection report, which is not the complete truth. He also took a dig at MLAs of opposition political parties saying that who are leaving for New Delhi on December 8 to mount pressure on Mr Gogoi to step down in order to facilitate an impartial investigation of the `1,000-crore scam of NC Hills.
The leaders of Opposition parties who met here on Saturday decided to submit memorandum to the President of India, Prime Minister and the state governor demanding action against those responsible for misappropriation of funds including chief minister Tarun Gogoi and the ministers concerned.
On the other hand, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has decided to launch a movement demanding resignation of the chief minister.
