NCW chief denies dress code remark
National Commission for Women chairperson Mamta Sharma, who arrived here on Wednesday in connection with Guwahati molestation case, submitted 17-point recommendation of the commission to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi who, she claimed, has agreed to implement it.
Ms Sharma, who is in the eye of storm for her remark recommending dress code for women, denied to have made any such remarks to the newspaper.
Ms Sharma, who was quoted by a section of newspapers advocating dress code for women to ensure their safety, told reporter, “Ask the newspaper to give evidence of me saying so. Why should girl be kept imprisoned? I am for equal right and freedom to both men and women.”
The NCW chairperson also met the victim at her residence in the city.
Ms Sharma urged the chief minister to provide all required help to the girl, in terms of security and medical care. She also suggested setting up a special fast track court to hold trial in the case.
Ms Sharma, who also had meeting with Assam director general of the police Jayanta Choudhury and IGPs here, however, held the break down of social values in the society responsible for such horrible incidents of molestation. “The attitude of the people has to be changed,” she said, while expressing her satisfaction over the response of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on recommendation of the NCW in the wake of molestation case.
The commission has made other recommendations like setting up of round the clock helplines for women, and night patrolling by men and women police officers etc.
Twelve persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident.
