NDA says firm on JPC demand

NDA convenor Sharad Yadav on Saturday declared that the NDA is firm on its demand for a joint parliamentary probe (JPC) into the 2G spectrum allocation scam. This came after a meeting of NDA leaders at the residence of BJP patriarch L.K. Advani.
“The agreement among all NDA members is that we all want a JPC,” said Mr Yadav after the meeting.
In the backdrop of two meetings that Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar had with the Opposition over ways to overcome the difference of opinion on the demand for a JPC probe into the 2G scam, leaders of the NDA met to share what was discussed in the meetings and finalise the strategy to be adopted in the Budget Session of Parliament.
“The NDA meeting was held in the wake of Speaker Meira Kumar’s meeting with us as we wanted to discuss among ourselves what had transpired in the two separate meetings with her,” said Mr Yadav.
Referring to the two rounds of talks held over the issue, Mr Yadav said that in the first round of talks held with Mr Advani and Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, it was made clear that the JPC demand has to be conceded if the governments intends to run Parliament business normally. He added, “In yesterday’s meeting (between other Opposition leaders, the Speaker and the government) also, the demand for JPC formation was reiterated.”
Asked if the Budget could be presented in the Budget Session of Parliament, Mr Yadav said, “Our conscience does not allow that the Parliament should not function. So we want the government to accept our JPC demand.”
Drawing a distinction between the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and a JPC, Mr Yadav said, “A JPC is needed to go into the larger issue of corruption.” Indicating that price-rise too is on the agenda of the NDA, Mr Yadav said, “We have not given up the issue of price rise.”
We never left it. Price rise is also a result of corruption. There is a direct and deep relationship between corruption and price rise.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
