Nearly 200 IAS officers in dock

The government is preparing to take punitive action against erring IAS officers who have not declared their assets so far. Nearly 200 IAS officers are in the dock for not declaring their assets by June 2011 and may face punitive action. All ministries and departments in the Central government have been asked to call for explanation of such officers who have not submitted their immovable property returns for the year 2010 so far.
A DoPT official said that if the defaulters are not forthcoming, punitive action will be taken like denial of vigilance clearance.
As the government prepares to crack down on defaulters, an official said that this would be the first time some officers are going to face tough action. DoPT sources said presently 208 IAS officers are yet to declare information regarding assets, income-tax returns and assets of their dependants. Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officials, as per their service rules, are required to submit their Immovable Property returns (IPRs) in January every year.
“Vigilance clearances have so far only been denied in cases where a chargesheet has been filed against an IAS officer. Now refusing to declare your assets has become equivalent to having a chargesheet against your name since you will be denied a vigilance clearance,” said an official.
The official said that denial of vigilance clearance and empanelment of an officer would amount to blocking his or her future prospects having a direct bearing on promotions, transfers or deputation at all stages.

jagan mother writes to pm, wants fair play
Hyderabad, Aug. 20: Cornered by CBI probe into his assets, Y.S. Jagan mohan Reddy, MP, on Saturday made his mother Y.S. Vijayamma write a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pleading to “bring some semblance of justice, sanity and fair play” in the ongoing investigation.
“I write this letter with a heavy heart. I am shocked at the brazenness with which the Central government is stifling dissent in any form, be it the way the Hazare movement is handled or the way CBI has been unleashing a reign of terror in the name of investigation into alleged disproportionate assets case of Y.S. Jagan mohan Reddy, who left Congress party to start the YSR Congress,” she said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
