Nellai MP top performer
Chennai: Congress MP Ramasubbu (63) from Tirunelveli continues to be one of the top performing MPs in India by utilising time effectively to raise questions, participate in debates and introduce private member bills.
A private voluntary research firm in New Delhi, PRS legislative research, which analyses the participation of MPs and their work in Parliament every session, published a report on the performance of MPs. Apart from performance, the report highlighted the fact that 43 per cent of the 15th Lok Sabha (all 14 sessions) was lost in disruptions.
The performance report studied business hours of the 15th Lok Sabha which had 335 sittings in 14 sessions. A portion of lost time was compensated with extra sittings.
As per the report, among the 545 MPs, Maharashtra based MPs Anandrao Adsul and Gajanan Dharmshi, Arjun Ram Meghwal of Rajasthan and Tirunelveli MP Ramasubbu figure in the list of MPs whose overall performance strengthened the business hours of Parliament.
While the national average of attendance of MPs was 77 per cent, Ramasubbu’s score was 97 per cent. Most importantly, the average number of debates in which MPs participated was just 36.3 whereas Ramasubbu beat the record by participating in 161 debates and recorded his views.
Ramasubbu introduced two private member bills which include ‘The fishermen (welfare) bill 2012’ and ‘The special educational facilities (for children of parents living below the poverty line) bill 2012’.
The study also pointed out the least performing MPs. “25 MPs have a total tally of ‘zero’ attendance. This means, they have not participated in debates, asked questions or introduced private member bills,” said the study.
While Congress MP Ramesh Kumar from New Delhi secured 100 per cent attendance, he had not participated in any debate, asked any question or introduced any bills.
