New Gujjar group set to revive stir
A breakaway section of the Gujjars, backed by BJP leaders formulated a strategy to revive the Gujjar agitation on the issue of quota. The group, led by former NCP MLA Ramveer Singh Bidhuri, had two meetings with the saffron leaders, and gave a call to organise a state-wide strike on June 13 if the state government failed to provide five per cent reservation to the community. However, Col. K.S. Bainsla distanced himself from this move.
Gujjar leaders gathered in Jaipur and reviewed their preparedness for the proposed agitation. “We have rejected the accord signed by Mr Bainsla with the state government. The Gujjars want five per cent reservation in government jobs,” Mr Bidhuri said. Former BJP MLA Gopi Gujjar said the community had been cheated by both the BJP and Congress. BJP MLA Hem Singh Bhadana said if the government did not make legal provisions for reservation to the community, the Gujjars will lay a siege to Jaipur.
The BJP maintained a stoic silence over the issue while most of its Gujjars leaders, including former ministers, sitting MLAs and other officer bearers were present in the meeting chaired by Mr Bidhuri, who had recently resigned from the Congress. Those who were present in the meeting, included former BJP minister Nathu Singh, Kalu Lal Gujjar and Mayor Sheeel Dhabhai.
