NHRC pulls up assam govt over riot relief
The National Human Rights Commission has found serious lack on the part of the Assam government in the relief and rehabilitation camps in the violence-hit districts of the state. An NHRC team, which visited these camps, has said in its report that there was a wide difference in the actual and official figures of total inmates at the relief camps, besides questioning the other claims of the state government, including the monetary assistance, supply of food and health and security measures. The Commission has slapped a notice on the Assam government to submit a report within eight weeks on the findings of the NHRC team.
In an official release, the NHRC made public the findings of its four-member team, who submitted a detailed report to the Commission after visiting the relief camps in the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri .
“All the relief camps were by and large over crowded. There was a wide difference in the actual and official figures of total inmates at the relief camps. This is creating problems in proper supply of food, ration and other amenities,” the Commission accused. “Security was a principal concern and the inmates feared returning back to their villages,” it added.
