NHRC team to visit violence-hit Greater Noida village

The National Human Rights Commission, which has received complaints of human rights violations in the Bhatta Parsaul village in Greater Noida, will send an investigative team to the village, a statement said on Thursday.

Four people, including two policemen, were killed in an exchange of gunfire between farmers protesting land acquisition and the police in Bhatta Parsaul in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. "In several complaints received in the commission, it has been alleged that the police mercilessly lathicharged the farmers who were demanding more compensation for their land which is being acquired by the state government," the NHRC statement said.

"In view of the gravity of the situation, the commission has decided to depute its investigation team for conducting an on-the-spot inquiry in the matter," it added. The farmers in the village are agitating for higher compensation for land taken for constructing the 156-km Yamuna Expressway, which will link New Delhi with Agra and reduce travel time by an hour. "NHRC is pained to see complaints and media reports alleging large scale violence in Bhatta Parsaul and other nearby areas in Greater Noida, leading to loss of life and injuries to several persons, including the officers on the state government's duty," the statement said.

"Incidents of stone pelting of government officials by the agitating farmers, and the police personnel tresspassing the villagers' houses, outraging women's dignity and burning of crops are alleged. Fire was also exchanged between the police and some agitators," it added.
