Nilam puts coast on alert
With weathermen sounding the warning bell that cyclone Nilam is likely to move towards the North-West from North Tamil Nadu and across South Coastal Andhra Pradesh by Wednesday evening, the entire coastal belt, including ports in the state, has been put on high alert.
The deep depression turned into a cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening near South-West Bay of Bengal.
The warning for cyclonic weather conditions at ports such as Krishnapatnam and Visakhapatnam will continue until Wednesday evening while warning for fishermen against venturing into sea will continue for two more days.
“Though the cyclone is barely 500-km away from South-East Chennai, rough weather will continue in the Bay of Bengal and it is not advisable to venture into sea,” warned the Cyclone Warning Centre, Visakhapatnam.
People living along the coastline of North Andhra will be in the grip of Nilam, which is likely to cross southern Andhra Pradesh in the coming 24 hours.
High velocity winds of 45-50km per hour have been reported along the coastline.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has deputed a 47-member rapid action team to Nellore from the National Disaster Management unit stationed at Guntur as part of precautionary measures. This team of experts is expected to reach Nellore on Wednesday morning.
