Nine of a family die in mishap

In a tragic mishap, nine persons of a Mumbai-based family and their driver were killed when their sports utility vehicle(SUV) had a head on collision with a private luxury bus near Kashedi village on the Mumbai-Goa Highway early on Sunday.
According to the police, the driver Suraj Shankar Jadhav (22) lost control over the SUV while manoeuvring a sharp turn and rammed it straight into the bus, which was coming from the opposite direction at around 4.15 am. The impact of the crash was so intense that the SUV was crushed, instantly killing the 10 occupants of the vehicle. The villagers from Kashedi village heard a loud thud, after which they rushed to the spot. The highway police was notified and the bodies were extricated.

UK prisoner allowed to return home

Dec. 12: A British national, Patrick Malluzzo, has been granted permission to serve the remaining period of his 10 year sentence in his own country. He has been taken to New Delhi from Kota for repatriation. ‘’He will be send to UK,” says a senior official in the home department in Jaipur.
Mr Patrick came to India as a backpacker in year 2003 and was arrested by the Kota police in January 2004 under India’s Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act. The police claimed to have discovered narcotics from him while Mr Patrick vehemently denied such charges.
The Briton was sentenced to 10 years and also fined `1 lakh.

MHA: Identify sick foreign jail inmates

Dec. 12: The Union home ministry has asked states to identify foreign terminally ill prisoners (TIP) so that their cases can be taken up for repatriation through MEA. The move is part of MHA’s efforts asking state governments to ensure that TIPs are given adequate medical treatment and legal aid in prisons. As a first step, the MHA has asked all states and UTs to identify TIPs in all prisons across the country under each of the categories of “judicial custody’’, “undertrials’’ and “convicts’’ to ensure their access to legal and medical aid.
