No bail to smuggler of luxury cars
The Madras high court on Wednesday dismissed the anticipatory bail petition of Alex C. Joseph of Thadiyur village, in Kerala, who apprehended arrest in connection with a case relating to smuggling into India luxurious cars.
In their counter-affidavits, the CBI, ACB and deputy director of DRI, stated that Joseph was engaged in the import of high-value foreign cars business for several years. Imports of these cars were permitted only on transfer of residence rules under the Customs Act.
The investigation was in the initial stage and his presence was essential to find out his role and that of others and also to know the modus operandi of smuggling of cars from abroad, the counters added.
Concurring with the submissions of CBI and DRI, Justice B. Rajendran dismissed the anticipatory bail petition of Joseph.
