No of cancer patients rising in India every year: Govt

The government on Tuesday said that the number of cancer patients in the country was increasing every year and presently there were around 28 lakh cancer affected people.

This information was given by Minister of State for Health Sudip Bandyopadhyay in a reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

"As per the information collected by the Population Based Cancer Registry functioning under the National Cancer Registry Programme of the Indian Council for Medicine and Research, it has been estimated that there are around 28 lakh cancer patients in the country," Bandyopadhyay said.

"There is a gradual increase in the number of cancer patients every year," he said. In response to another question, Bandyopadhyay said that the number of reported malaria cases in the country had come down.

"Intensified prevention and control efforts have resulted in the decline if reported malaria deaths in 2011 as compared to 2006," he said.

He also gave details as per which there were 1707 deaths in 2006 which came down to 1018 in 2010 while only 463 deaths due to malaria occurred in 2011 as per provisional data available.

In response to yet another question in the Rajya Sabha Bandyopadhyay said that India was raked 16 th among the 22 high burden countries with regard to the incidence of TB.
