No city for women, Bengaluru ‘apes’ Delhi

Bengaluru: Here is why Bengaluru is not so safe for women. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the IT city has witnessed the highest number of crimes against women after the national capital. Bengaluru city police have registered 1,890 cases of crimes against women in 2011 while Delhi reported 4,489 cases.
The Crime in India–2011 data has taken into consideration crimes against women in 53 big cities during 2011 and found that 33,789 cases were reported from these cities across the country. Among these 53 cities, Delhi accounted for 13.3 per cent (4,489 cases) of crimes against women, followed by Bengaluru 5.6 per cent (1,890 cases), Hydera­bad (1,860 cases) and Vijayawada (1,797 cases).
The report also highlights that as many as 556 cases of molestation were registered in Delhi, while such cases stood at 553 cases in Mumbai, 254 in Kolkata and 250 cases in Bengaluru. It is also revealed that Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Patna have recorded more cases under Special and Local Laws among the mega cities.
About 162 cases of sexual harassment were registered by Chennai police, 149 in Delhi, 144 in Kolkata, 121 in Chennai, 93 in Hyderabad and 40 in Bengaluru between January and December 2011, the data revealed.
Even in cases under Dowry Prohibition Act, of a total of 5,182 cases, Andhra Pradesh tops with 28.7 percent of cases (1,899 cases) followed by Karnataka (1,210 cases) accounting for 18.3 percent.
This apart, Delhi (9.9 per cent), Kanpur (7.3 per cent), Mumbai (6.7 per cent) and Bengaluru (6.3 percent) have accounted for the total crimes reported from 53 cities. A total of 4,75,369 cognizable crimes under the IPC were reported in these cities during 2011.
