No compromise on JPC, says BJP
Putting the onus of smooth functioning of Parliament on the government, main Opposition BJP on Sunday ruled out any compromise on the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe demand in the 2G spectrum issue.
Senior BJP leader and party’s national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said, “Why is the Congress afraid of a JPC? Does the Congress-led government fear that its secrets will come out in the open in such a probe. There will be no compromise in the demand for a JPC.”
The Winter Session of Parliament has hardly functioned ever since it commenced on November 9, with the Opposition demanding a JPC probe into the alleged scams including 2G spectrum allocation case.
Seeking to target Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the 2G scam, Mr Hussain said that the government cannot separate its responsibility from the “corrupt ways” of an individual.
“Shielding the corrupt is as grave a crime as perpetrating corruption,” the senior BJP leader said. The government has ruled out setting up a JPC to probe the alleged irregularities and offered to discuss the issue in Parliament for four days. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday appealed to the Opposition parties to let Parliament function so that a debate on the issue could take place.
On the issue of Central Vigilance Commissioner P.J. Thomas, Mr Hussain said his appointment was opposed by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj and yet the government went ahead with it. “What secrets of the Congress are known to the CVC that the government is not acting against him,” Mr Hussain said.
