No DMK threat to UPA: Cong

While the fate of railways minister Dinesh Trivedi is likely to be known only next week, the Congress on Friday exuded confidence that the UPA faced no threat from the DMK over the issue of alleged human rights violations against Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The Congress core group meeting, which was attended by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, was held on Friday ahead of the discussion on the railway budget in Parliament next week.

The core group is learnt to have discussed on the demand of the Trinamul Congress for change of the railways minister. The Congress leaders are learnt to have deliberated deeply on the strategy ahead in the backdrop of the Trivedi issue.

They also discussed the political situation in Uttarakhand. Sources said that the government was in no hurry about the exit of the railway minister, with party leaders maintaining that it was an internal matter of the ally Trinamul Congress.

Sources said that the Congress feels that there appears to have been a rethinking over Trivedi issue inside the TMC.

This, the Congress leaders said, allows the party to wait for a while to take a decision. Meanwhile, the Congress appears to be confident that there would be no problem on the DMK front.

“I do not see any such possibility. DMK MPs were in full strength in the House today,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters when asked whether there was any threat to UPA from DMK MPs.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
