No escape for Sen from LS
The Lok Sabha will take up impeachment proceedings against Calcutta high court judge Soumitra Sen on Monday despite Justice Sen submitting his resignation to the Presid-ent and the Lok Sabha Speaker. Attorney-General G.E. Vahanvati is understood to have recommended that the impeachment proceedings should go ahead.
Replying to the Lok Sabha Secretariat’s missive, the A-G has recommended that “the impeachment motion against Justice Sen must go on as per the schedule in Lok Sabha”.
Justice Sen is facing impeachment in Parlia-ment on corruption charges and judicial misconduct. The Lok Sabha Secretariat had on Thursday decided to consult the A-G.
In his resignation submitted to the President and the Lok Sabha Speaker, Justice Sen said, “I am not guilty of any form of corruption.” He had faxed his resignation to the President on Thursday.
Rashtrapati Bhavan is understood to have referred the resignation to the department of law and justice. Sources said the President referred the resignation to the justice department with a note that the faxed resignation was not acceptable and needs to be in original and signed in his own hand. The judge had submitted his resignation days before the Lok Sabha was to take up an impeachment motion against him.
