“I am not a legend at all! I felt uncomfortable when my guru K. Balachandar sir was honoured with Rajinikanth Legendary Award. I told even my wife Latha about it. Henceforth from next year, the award should be bestowed in the name of K.Balachandar sir”, remarked Superstar Rajinikanth at the 21st Annual Day celebration of the Ashram Arts Academy, owned by the actor’s wife Latha Rajinikanth in Chennai.

Adding further he said, “They told me to come on stage only at the end and that’s why I am here now. I am happy for all the Bhishma Awardees including actress Asha Parekhji and who had come all the way from Mumbai and late Shammi Kapoor whose son Adhithya is here today”.

Recalling his association with Shammi Kapoor, Rajini said that he once met the stylish actor at a coffee shop and had great time with him.

Heaping praises on his sishya Rajinikanth, Balachandar said, “I have not seen anyone, anywhere a person like Rajinikanth whose ‘guru bhakthi’ is uncomparable! Rajini is a phenomenon India has ever produced. I sincerely feel happy for Latha Rajinikanth whose dedication in academic field amazes me”. A standing ovation was given to KB when he was given the award.

Latha who was beaming with energy and high spirits said that her husband is the biggest Nationalist we have with us. “Lot of people asks him if he would join politics. A person need not necessarily be in politics to serve the nation. He can still be a nationalist and serve the people”.

Asha Parekh said, “It’s a double whammy for me today. I am getting honoured along with late Shammiji with whom I started my Bollywood career”.

Children's tribute to awardees

Children from the school performed cultural events with some of the songs from KB, Asha Parekh and Shammi Kapoor films dedicated to the legends. The Superstar’s wife also enthralled audiences with her sweet voice by crooning few Hindi songs and shook her leg along with Asha Parekh. Go Green endeavor was also launched.

Others honoured include table tennis ex-champ Chandrashekar, VS Raghavan, Grammy winner Vikku Vinayakram, Film News Anandhan, AL Raghavan and wife MN Rajam, pundit Nithya Agnihotri.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
