‘No more political influence in higher education’
In a bid to revive the higher education system, new state higher education minister Bratya Basu asserted that higher education would be made free from political influence and even a search committee would be constituted to look into the appointments made by the previous Left Front government.
The minister held a meeting with the advisory committee comprising academician Sunanda Sanyal, economists Abhirup Sarkar, Kalyan Sanyal, Kalyan Rudra, former bureaucrat Debobrata Bandopadhyay and educationist Avik Sarkar on Tuesday.
Mr Basu said, “There have been lot of reports of nepotism in regard to appoints at various posts. A search committee will be looking into such complaints. The advisory committee will primarily look into the functioning of the universities. We want to give the vice-chancellors a free hand in taking decision in regard to the improvement of the quality of education.” He added that the department may even revive the education policy by consulting the experts within the legal framework. The minister also informed that further appointments of teachers and academicians will be done on the basis of merit.
