No one will buy bankrupt Bengal govt, says Mamata
As the electoral battle lines get drawn in ever-sharpening lines in West Bengal, Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee declared on Sunday that nobody would buy the state government if it were auctioned, given its poor financial condition.
“If the government is put up for auction, no one will buy it,” thundered the Trinamul leader in an 'interview' that has been carried in her own party's website. Lashing out at the Left Front-led government, she said: “The state today is bankrupt, with a debt of over `2 lakh crore.” She claimed, “Whatever money had been allotted for infrastructure has been used to pay salaries.”
Her observations on the dire straits West Bengal is in have come close on the heels of the release of the Trinamul manifesto and 'vision' for the forthcoming polls - one that's been clearly drawn with the help of economists as it details the shambles in which the state's economy and industry is in.
Now, the party has promised to build the state's “industrial might”, perhaps in a bid to shrug off its anti-industry image which it acquired post its Nandigram and Singur agitations.
Accusing the Left Front government of having “infiltrated the police forces and educational institutions with their own agendas”, Mamatadi, whose party is expected to fare well in the coming polls, says confidently in the interview: “Our target is 294 seats” and that “It's for the Ma, Mati , Manush to decide, how many will we get. I leave it to the people.”
So where does the leader draw her confidence from, asks the interviewer. To which, she responds: “I know every road, every district and every town in Bengal.”
