No post-poll violence in WB now, arms seizures to continue

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that no post-poll political violence was taking place in the state now but said that police will continue operations in seizing illegal arms.

''No political violence is taking place. Small incidents are taking place but those are not political clashes. Other parties are involved in this,'' Banerjee told newsmen.

She said that although her party had been demanding recovery of illegal arms for the past two years, the then state government did not pay heed to it.

''We have now asked the police to recover the illegal arms and police are doing it. Police have been asked to work impartially. Our priority is to maintain law and order without looking at political affiliations,'' she said.

The chief minister appealed to the people and activists of political parties to inform the police if they have information about any illegal arms. ''They must not take law into their own hands and must be in touch with police.''

Asked whether she has ordered any enquiry about the recovery of arms from near a CPI(M) office at Enayatpur, she did not give a direct reply.

''Police is doing whatever is needed to be done in the matter. They have already begun an enquiry. Let the police do its work. I will let you know if I have to say anything,'' the chief minister said.
