No semi-open prison facility for Manu Sharma in Tihar
Manu Sharma, undergoing life term in Tihar jail in the Jessica Lall murder case, will not get the semi-open prison facility for his parole being ‘adversely reported’.
The facility, which already exists in 32 prisons across the country, will soon become functional in Tihar. It allows a convict to step out of jail and work to earn wages.
However, not all the convicts will be eligible to avail it. One of the criteria stipulates that the convicts who have availed either three paroles or furloughs should have nothing adverse reported against them during their temporary release.
In case of Sharma, sources said, he had violated his parole terms. He had requested for parole to take care of his ageing mother and the family's business interest. Later it was found that none of the reasons cited by him in his application for three-month parole were valid, they said.
"The inmates will leave the jail premises to work for a stipulated time period and come back to their cell thereafter before night time. They will be allowed to work within a certain radius of the prison complex," a Tihar Prison official said.
The eligible convicts will work in Public Works Department, Horticulture or contract projects inside the prison complex spread over 4,500 acres, the official said, adding that it would equip them to join society once they are free.
The facility will be open to convicts who have been sentenced for five to ten years and have a remaining two years to serve, he said. A committee chaired by DIG Prisons will select the prisoners who can avail this facility.
