No shift on Iran, Burma
A day after US President Barack Obama signalled support to India’s quest for permanent UNSC membership, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Beijing “understands” India’s aspirations to play a greater role in the UN, but New Delhi is under no illusions about the difficult and complicated road ahead.
New Delhi indicated it was not unduly perturbed by Mr Obama’s comment on how it had chosen to “avoid” certain issues, saying its viewpoint on issues like Iran or Burma did not always coincide with Washington’s, and that there would be no deviation from the existing policy.
On Iran, India is likely to stick to the position that while it has the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy as an NPT signatory, it had certain obligations too.
