No tieup in Bihar: Cong
The Congress would stick to its original plan of “going solo” in Bihar as the party on Friday scotched all rumours of it having truck with any party, including the Ram Vilas Paswan-led LJP.
Reiterating the party stand, AICC general secretary in-charge of Bihar Mukul Wasnik said, “We are going it alone. We are preparing to contest all the 243 seats in the state.” A lot of groundwork has already been completed and so there was no question of having truck with anyone in the coming Assembly elections in the state, he added.
Dismissing reports of a possible tieup with the LJP ahead of the Assembly election as “rumours”, Mr Wasnik said the Congress is looking at regaining its lost ground in the politically sensitive state and it is going to be very important election for the party, as suggested by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
The party has already put in motion the exercise of selecting candidates for all the 243 Assembly seats in the state. This has begun after the party’s central observers submitted their report to Mr Wasnik last month on the ground-level feedback.
Mrs Sonia Gandhi has already stated that the Bihar Assembly elections were “important” for the party and had expressed hope that this would be treated as an opportunity for revival in the state with “collective and cohesive” work.
“This is an important election for us... The Congress will revive itself in Bihar if we work collectively and cohesively,” she said in her “Letter to the Congresspersons” in the last issue of party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh.
In the mouthpiece she noted that in the past six years, the UPA government has ensured an exponential increase in funds to the Bihar government for various development schemes and projects and the party workers must take this message to the people.
Moreover, on Thursday, even Mr Paswan had denied reports of the LJP’s merger or alliance with the Congress saying his talks with Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD on seat-sharing are at an “advanced stage”.
“Koi khichri nahin pak rahi hai (there is no such thing)... There is no such talk. The LJP-RJD talks are in the advanced stage for Bihar polls,” he had said, adding that very soon everything would be in place and the two parties will go together in polls.
