‘Not appropriate to meet Sonia when Kani in jail’

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday said he did not call on Congress president Sonia Gandhi during his visit to Delhi as it was “not appropriate” to meet her when his daughter Kanimozhi, arrested in connection with the 2G scam, was in prison.

“There was an opportunity. There was time to meet Sonia Gandhi (but) since my daughter Kanimozhi is in jail, it was not appropriate for me to meet Mrs Gandhi and I avoided meeting her,” he told reporters here after chairing a DMK legislature meet.
He, however, added that senior Congress leaders, including Union ministers P. Chidambaram and Ghulam Nabi Azad, had called on him (at the hotel where he was staying).
Mr Azad, the Congress in-charge of Tamil Nadu, had stated on Tuesday after meeting Mr Karunanidhi that Ms Kanimozhi’s arrest would not impact ties between the two parties but insisted that the government would not interfere in the case. He had also said Mrs Gandhi is concerned about Ms Kanimozhi being in jail.
Mr Karunanidhi met Ms Kanimozhi at Tihar Jail in Delhi on May 23, spending nearly an hour with her.
He said Ms Kanimozhi was prepared to face the present situation with “grit and determination” and both of them were confident that justice would prevail.
On the AIADMK government’s decision to shelve his pet initiative of reviving the Legislative Council, he said it was an “expected” one.
To a question on the reported remark by former LTTE arms procurer Pathmanathan that the DMK ideology had influenced the outfit to assassinate former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Mr Karunanidhi said he didn’t know who he was or what he had said.
Meanwhile, Mr Karunanidhi’s son Tamilarasu and daughter Selvi met their half-sister Kanimozhi at a trial court here.
Accompanied by DMK Parliamentary Party leader T.R. Baalu, they also met former telecom minister A. Raja and Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar at the Patiala House courts complex.
Tamilarasu’s wife Mohana, DMK leader M.K. Stalin’s wife Durga and Union minister Dayanidhi Maran’s mother Mallika met Ms Kanimozhi and spoke to her for nearly 45 minutes in the complex. —PTI

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
