Notice to AMU to put court meet on hold
After receiving representations from MPs and allegations of corruption against Aligarh Muslim University administration, the HRD ministry has on behalf of the President issued a showcause notice to Aligarh Muslim University asking it why the proceeding of the university to convene the meeting of the court on December 19 should not be annulled.
A group of MPs had met President Pratibha Devisingh Patil and HRD minister Kapil Sibal earlier this week and submitted a memorandum signed by 137 MPs from different political parties and sought their intervention in postponing the annual meeting of the AMU court. The showcause issued by the HRD ministry stated that: “The President of India, in her capacity as the visitor of the university, in exercise of powers vested in her under Sub-Section 6 of Section 13 of the AMU Act, is pleased to direct that a showcause notice be issued to the university as to why the proceeding of the University to convene the meeting of the court on 19th December, 2010 should not be annulled.”
“The visitor has directed that until the university’s reply to this show cause notice is received and the decision of the visitor in this regard is communicated, the University shall deep the decision to hold the meeting of the court in abeyance,” the notice added. The AMU court meeting was scheduled to be held on December 19 to elect the university’s next executive council.
