Notice to govt over fresh plea on Radia
The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Union government on a fresh petition on the Radia tapes and clubbed it for further hearing along with industrialist Rattan Tata’s petition seeking probe into leak of the tapes to media.
The new petition was filed by advocate Ravindra Kumar, who said though the government has the right under the law to tap the telephone of any person in national interest but utmost care should be taken that the rights of “individuals” were not violated in the process.
In order to uphold the right of privacy of individuals, Mr Kumar urged the Supreme Court to lay down fresh “guidelines” for the investigating agencies regarding intercepting of the telephonic conversations.
The Supreme Court had earlier laid certain guidelines on the petition of People’s Union of Civil Liberty in 1996 when the telephone was the monopoly of government and there was hardly any noteworthy private service provider in the field.
