NRI quota abused
Hyderabad: The government has been accused of adopting dual standards for admissions under the NRI quota in professional colleges. This is said to be the prime reason for private medical colleges resorting to indiscriminate sale of seats under the pretext of the 15 per cent NRI quota, which was set up by the government for the first time this year.
The government had tightened NRI quota norms in engineering colleges by restricting seats only to children of NRIs. But for medical colleges, it had decided to allow NRI-sponsored students, allowing private colleges to admit locals by creating fake NRI sponsorship certificates.
The government had introduced the “NRI-sponsored clause” for engineering colleges during the 2008-09 academic year under pressure from college managements. However, the state had removed the clause last year following complaints of colleges selling seats to locals by collecting donations.
The government issued fresh orders this month creating 15 per cent NRI quota within the 40 per cent management quota in medical colleges for the first time, and allowed them to admit NRI-sponsored students.
There are allegations that the managements had struck a deal with the government. In return for creation of the NRI-sponsored quota, they would agree to the old fee structure. While the fee was due to be increased this year, the government was not keen on it as it is an election year.
As soon as the orders were issued, the colleges sold out their NRI quota seats. The admission notifications being issued for management quota seats also only talk of the 25 per cent management quota, but not the 15 per cent NRI quota.
