NTR's widow evicted from house
Telugu Desam Party founder president N.T. Rama Rao's widow Lakshmi Parvathi was on Friday evicted from the house she was living in since the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister's death 15 years ago.
Armed with court orders and the help of police, NTR's son T. Ramakrishna evicted her from the house on Road No. 13 in the posh Banjara Hills neighbourhood in Hyderabad.
Lakshmi Parvathi was not present in the house when all her belongings were removed from the house and kept on the roadside.
The belongings include Lakshmi Parvathi's photographs with her late husband, a popular Telugu actor who founded the TDP.
Ramakrishna said the civil court had asked Lakshmi Parvathi to vacate the house by Nov 30. He said since she failed to vacate the house, he had no option but to take the action.
After a 10-year-long legal battle, the city civil court had ruled the house belonged to NTR's younger daughter Umamaheswari as it is registered in her name.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court and later the Supreme Court also upheld the civil court order.
Umamaheswari, who lives in the US, had given general power of attorney to her brother Ramakrishna.
Lakshmi Parvathi, the second wife of NTR, told reporters in Guntur she was forcibly evicted, though she had sought time to vacate the house. "Is this the way to treat wife of a man who brought glory to the state?," asked Lakshmi Parvathi.
She was emotionally attached to the house as it was here that NTR died in January 1996, a few months after he was unseated from power by his son-in-law N. Chandrababu Naidu, she said.
NTR had floated the TDP in 1982 and created history by coming to power in the state within nine months of launchign the new party.
A few months before returning to power with a landslide majority in 1994, NTR married Lakshmi Parvathi, a college lecturer who became close to him while writing his biography.
However, the thespian through the second marriage annoyed his family who alleged that Parvathi had an overriding influence in party and government affairs.
NTR's son-in-law Chandrababu Naidu led a revolt against him to become the chief minister in August 1995.
NTR died a broken man in January 1996. After his death, Lakshmi Parvathi went into political oblivion.
