Nurses move SC to scrap ‘bonded’ labour
Nurses have knocked the door of the apex court on Saturday to end the system of service bonds across the country.
Calling service bond a “serious human right violation in the form of ‘bonded labour,’ the Indian Professional Nurses Association filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court to scrap it.
Hospitals compel nurses to sign in service bonds and withhold their original certificates. They force the nurses to work against their will by imposing a condition to deposit a huge amount to release the certificates, the petition argued.
The petition has also accused hospitals of non-payment of minimum wages and forcing nurses to work overtime. No proper safety measures are made available to the nurses who are treating patients suffering from serious illness.
