Obama drops in for meeting with menon
US President Barack Obama has underlined his commitment to building a “true global, strategic partnership” with India at a key discussion in the White House where the American leader dropped in for a meeting with National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon.
The US President dropped in for a meeting with Mr Menon when the Indian NSA was meeting with his American counterpart Tom Donilon at the White House on Friday.
“The President joined the meeting and reaffirmed his commitment to building a true global, strategic partnership with India,” the White House said in a statement on Saturday.

Gas leak in Hardoi kills 3, sickens 7

Jan. 29: A gas leak in a privately-owned chemical factory in Hardoi district left three persons, including a woman, dead and seven others critically ill on Saturday.
Angry residents blocked the Lucknow-Hardoi highway, demanding action against the factory owner and compensation for the victims. According to reports reaching here, leakage of phosphine gas took place during production of chemicals at the Amit Heterochem Lab in Sandila industrial area, around 3 am on Saturday. Two persons sleeping nearby died after inhaling the gas while another worker at the nearby rice mill also died.

Farmer sets self on fire, dies for aid

Jan. 29: A farmer immolated himself in Mahoba district on Friday while demanding higher compensation for his land.
Babu Khushwaha died on Saturday morning in Jhansi Medial College Hospital where he had been referred to after initial treatment at the district hospital in Mahoba.
The farmer’s death further agitated the protesters who blocked the road and shouted slogans against the local administration on Saturday. With tension in the area rising, additional forces are being rushed to the site.
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakhs for the kin of the deceased.

UP woman assaulted for love marriage

Jan. 29: A dalit woman was assaulted and her hair was cut off by her own family members after she married a man from a different caste against their wishes in Ballia district on Saturday.
According to SP Ballia, “Savita, 20, had married a youth from a different caste at a temple on January 26 against the wishes of her family members. The family members on Saturday assaulted her and chopped off her hair.”
Savita later lodged a complaint after which her mother and brother have been arrested, the police official said.
