Obama: India a partner in countering terror
US President Barack Obama equated India as a world power and called for a partnership on issues like counter-terrorism to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the whole world.
Speaking after the ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the US President stated that his trip to India intended to strengthen what is already an incredible friendship and said it would be one of the defining partnerships of the century.
The US President and his wife Michelle arrived at the ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday morning escorted by horse-mounted personnel of the presidential bodyguards in the backdrop of a 21-gun salute.
The duo were received on the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Pratibha Patil, her husband Devisingh Shekhawat, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur.
Mr Obama and Michelle were seen talking and joking with the Prime Minister and Ms Gursharan Kaur. Speaking at the occasion, the US President stated that the two countries would be able to focus on issues like counter-terrorism in order to ensure that both the US and India are secure well into the future.
He expressed hope that the discussions between the two countries will be able to build on the commercial ties that already existed. “Given that India is not simply an emerging power but now it is a world power, the US and India can work together to promote peace, stability, prosperity not only for just two nations but for the whole world,” he said.
Mr Obama said that the US and India as two largest democracies share “extraordinary” people-to-people contact and stressed on the shared set of core values.
He also referred to the contributions made by the millions of Indian Americans.
