OBC list expansion approved
The government on Thursday approved inclusion and amendment of the names of castes and communities in the Central list of other backward classes (OBCs). The decision has been taken in respect of states including Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Union Territory of Daman and Diu.
As this was reported first in this newspaper on July 22, at the meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the proposal was approved. The National Commission for Backward Classes (NBC) had recommended such inclusion and amendements in the Central list of OBC.
Sources confirmed that the government has given approval to most additions from Jharkhand (121) and Chhattishgarh (64) in the Central OBC list. “Since the two states — Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh — were carved out of United Bihar and Madhya Pradesh respectively in 2001, castes from these states were not in the Central OBC list thereby depriving them of the benefits,” the sources said. In addition to this Adrakhi Mahato caste of Bihar is one such community, whose inclusion in the Central list of OBC for Bihar has also been approved. Similar changes have been approved for OBC’s list for Haryana.
