Omar in elite club: Farooq
Union minister Farooq Abdullah, making light of the shoe-throwing incident of Sunday, said his son, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, has joined an elite club of leaders who have all had shoes flung at them.
On a more serious note, Dr Abdullah said the incident showed the security apparatus is “useless”. Asked if the incident reflected a sense of disillusionment, he said, “We have to fight out the situation that exists. We can’t run away.”
Dr Abdullah told reporters outside Parliament, “He has joined the elite club of former US President George W. Bush, home minister P. Chidambaram, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zadari and a few others with the reward of the shoe. It is a wonderful thing.”
The J&K CM is the latest of the victims of shoe protests, which began when an Iraqi journalist at a Baghdad press conference flung a shoe at Mr Bush, who ducked in time. Mr Zardari faced a similar incident in Birmingham early this month. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao too has been the target of thrown shoes.
